The Wabeno Amercian Legion Sylvan Post #44 is an area veteran’s service organization whose members are wartime veterans, their descendents and volunteers who are committed to mentoring youth and sponsoring wholesome programs in their communities. The Sons of the Legion (SAL) are male descendants, adopted, and stepsons of members of the Legion. They are active participants of the Legion and provide support for events.
The Wabeno American Legion donates to the Milwaukee VA Hosp. Iron Mountain VA Hospital and King Veterans Home. The Legion sponsors a Boy Scout Troop and donates money to send scouts to camp. They also donate to Hero’s To Hometowns, Veterans Artists for Humanities, to name a few.
The Wabeno Legion’s Education Committee awards an annual scholarship to students who have been leaders of their peers and in their academics. To receive a scholarship, you had to have a relative who served or is actively serving in the military. The Legion also sends students from Laona and Wabeno to Badger Boys State and hosts an annual awards dinner for Wabeno and Laona Seniors.
Active members of their communities, they march in at least seven parades in the area throughout the year, including Memorial Day. The Legion coordinates the Wabeno Memorial Day services annually. The Legion also participates in providing Funeral Honors at the request of Veterans' families.
